The Fellowship Connects & West Suffolk College EXPO: Showcasing Future Hairdressing Talent

The Fellowship Connects & West Suffolk College EXPO recently brought together college students, alumni, and industry professionals in a celebration of hairdressing and barbering excellence. Hosted within the cutting-edge facilities of West Suffolk College in Bury St. Edmunds, this event provided an inspiring platform for emerging talent to showcase their work and learn from industry leaders.

A Dynamic Collaboration

The event opened with a warm welcome from Marnie Williams, Head of the Academy of Hair and Beauty Studies at West Suffolk College, and Ashleigh Hodges, President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing. Marnie highlighted the unique connection between the college and the Fellowship, emphasizing the opportunities available for students to explore careers in the industry.

Spotlighting Alumni Success

The day featured exciting live demonstrations by former West Suffolk College students who shared their career journeys and skills:

  • Rachael Jennings and Lucy Wilding, specialists in bridal styling and colour (especially blondes), showcased on-stage creations while discussing trends and techniques. Lucy, a member of Project Colour 2024, explained how the college shaped her career.
  • Barbering alumni Connor Chesterton and Oli Norman demonstrated cutting-edge styles. Connor, who participated in Project Men & Media 2024, discussed the influence of the Fellowship on his work, while Oli reflected on his growth since his college days, including running his own barbershop.

Inspiring Educators and Innovators

Hairdressing educators Rachael Lomax (aka the Copper Queen) and Molly Raynor, both former West Suffolk College students, shared their tips for finding a niche in the industry. Molly’s achievements as part of the ClubStar Art Team 2024 inspired attendees to pursue their own passions.

A Show-Stopping Finale

The event concluded with a stunning presentation by Sophie-Rose Goldsworthy, award-winning stylist and leader of the 2025 ClubStar Art Team, alongside team members. The group demonstrated advanced braiding and styling techniques, sharing their experiences with the Fellowship and expressing excitement for their upcoming HAIRCON performance.

Celebrating Future Talent

Reflecting on the success of the event, Ashleigh Hodges said, “The talent showcased by the artists was absolutely incredible—I was lost for words. The annual West Suffolk College EXPO is an amazing opportunity to nurture and develop the next generation of talent.”

Marnie Williams added, “Being able to share the incredible achievements of our alumni with current students means the world. This event highlighted the exciting career pathways available and inspired everyone in attendance.”
